Delta Symptoms vs. Flu Symptoms

Living through a pandemic is something none of us would have predicted in early 2019, but now in 2021- here we are. Not only is COVID-19 continuing to spread, but it’s also mutating to new forms. The Delta variant of COVID-19 is the most popular strain of the virus being spread around right now. Unfortunately, we’re heading into peak flu season, too.

How will you know if you have the flu or COVID-19 Delta variant? The only way to know for sure is through diagnostic testing, but knowing what symptoms are associated with which illness will make it a lot easier to make an educated guess before your test results come back.

AFC Urgent Care Methuen provides COVID-19 testing for all patients. Our providers can also recommend medications to take if your test comes back negative, but you may have the flu. Visit our center today if you are feeling under the weather.

Delta Symptoms

The Delta variant is showing the same symptoms as the original COVID-19 strain. The most significant difference is how quickly the symptoms appear and how severe they are. The Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are all effective at minimizing the symptoms of the Delta variant. If you’re fully vaccinated, you will likely experience minimal or no symptoms.

Symptoms that are associated with the COVID-19 Delta variant include:

  • Sudden loss of taste or smell
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches

Flu Symptoms

The flu comes around each year and usually sees its peak during the winter months. The flu strain changes each year, much like how COVID-19 morphed into the Delta variant. Flu shots can be taken annually to reduce your risk of catching the flu and to minimize your symptoms if you do get it.

Common flu symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Muscle aches
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms

As you can see, many of the flu symptoms are the same as Delta variant symptoms! The most significant difference is the sudden loss of taste or smell associated with COVID-19 that isn’t caused by the flu.

When to Get Tested

Since COVID-19 Delta and flu symptoms are so common, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to getting tested. If you begin to feel symptoms, isolate, wear a mask, and get tested ASAP. Getting tested can rule out or confirm the possibility of COVID-19 so your doctor can determine the best course of treatment. If you test positive for COVID-19, you’ll need to notify anyone you’ve been around who could have been exposed so they can get tested too.

Visit AFC Urgent Care North Andover today for rapid COVID-19 and flu testing services. Testing for the Delta variant is available nationwide, so there’s no reason not to get tested! COVID-19 testing is also important for local, state, and federal governments to determine how the pandemic is continuing to spread in the USA. Don’t forget to practice social distancing, good personal hygiene, and mask-wearing to avoid both COVID-19 and the flu!
