Is Strep Throat a Virus?

Have you guzzled down hot tea with honey and still cannot seem to beat your sore throat? When you are struggling to swallow without pain, you may seek out every natural treatment plan. Over-the-counter medicines, warm beverages, Vitamin C, and other options might seem like they should be working. While these treatment methods may help a sore throat, strep throat is a different beast.

AFC Urgent Care Methuen provides treatment for all viruses and bacterial infections. Whether you have strep throat or another illness, AFC Methuen is there.

What Causes Strep Throat?

A viral infection does not cause strep throat. Instead, it is the result of a bacteria known as group A Streptococcus. People contract strep throat by drinking or eating after someone with the bacteria, breathing in droplets, or touching something with group A strep on it and then touching their nose or mouth.

Being around other sick people makes contracting the illness easier. If you are experiencing strep throat symptoms two to five days after being in contact with someone with strep, you likely have contracted the disease. It would be best if you were on the lookout for a bit more than a sore throat.

Symptoms of Strep Throat

When you have strep throat, you will likely notice a sore throat. A sore throat that doesn’t come with a cough or similar cold symptoms points to strep. While it is possible that you could have another illness in addition to strep, congestion is not indicative of this illness. Strep throat can come with:

  • Fever
  • Inflamed tonsils
  • Red spots on the roof of the mouth
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Scarlet fever

If you suspect strep throat, a test can confirm it for you. You can be tested at any doctor’s office or urgent care facility. When a doctor has confirmed strep, treatment is necessary.

Treating Strep Throat

The best treatment for strep throat is an antibiotic prescribed by a doctor. Most commonly, the antibiotic is amoxicillin or penicillin. Although you could eventually beat strep throat without the prescription, it does go away much faster with one. You might decide to soothe your throat with a hot beverage and honey, but it will not kill the bacteria. An antibiotic will make your symptoms disappear faster, end the contagious component of the bacteria, and prevent a more severe illness.

If you believe you have come in contact with strep throat and are showing symptoms, it will make things easier for you to get tested and obtain the necessary antibiotic if needed. Getting back to your regular routine will happen much faster if you get proper treatment.
